Portland, Oregon here, and we have a "next stop" announcement system. It only appears to be implemented for the major stops, however -- it's useless for me to figure out when I need to ring the bell in my residential neighborhood. Where it is implemented, it appears to be spot-on accurate -- when the bus pulls away from the previous stop, it announces the next one.
