I don't know how this might apply to a pay-as-you-go plan, but on my carrier (verizon) I can call up and say "I want to use this phone with this ESN on this line." As long as I don't buy the new phone through them, I don't extend the contract at all. (This does mean you would need to purchase an unlocked phone, though.)
